Feral Capture

Early on a Friday morning I received a call from a very distressed woman…her family had to move out of their house the next day and they had not been able to get close enough to their ‘feral’ pet cat to get it into a carrier. The husband had already tried and had been bit on the hand! I explained to her that I had never encountered a situation such as this before but I was up for the challenge.

The house was completely empty except for a terrified and very angry cat trapped inside a basement bathroom awaiting my arrival. I decided to let the cat out of the small space (an angry feral cat is not to be messed with in such small quarters!) The cat bolted out into the basement area and he and I did circles around each other for about 5 minutes before I finally cornered it into a bedroom so I could close the door and keep it confined. I had the nervous couple wait just outside the door with a cat carrier ready to go and I entered the room with catch pole in hand. After about 10 minutes of high adrenaline (both myself and the cat) I finally was able to catch the little guy…boy did he put up a fight! It was a first for me and the couple was extremely grateful that they did not have to leave behind a cat they had come to love…despite his wild ways!

Rattlesnakes take over home Jefferson County, Colorado

Last Saturday night I went to fill the bathtub to give my give my one year old baby a bath, and I found a baby rattlesnake in the bathroom. You can imagine how terrified I was. I scooped up my baby and ran out of the bathroom screaming at the top of my lungs. My husband ran in to see what was wrong. I was so scared, I couldn't even talk straight. I could only point at the bathroom from down the hall and mouth "snake." My husband got a large hammer and killed the thing.

We thought we had seen the last of the snakes, but just a few days later, on Tuesday, we were sitting down to dinner and another baby rattlesnake came out from our air-conditioning vent. Again I screamed and took the baby out of his highchair and stood on the island in my kitchen. My brave husband killed that snake, too.

Then last night, my husband got up in the middle night to get a drink of milk from the fridge. He noticed movement and heard rustling on the floor the kitchen next to him and turned on the light. There was another snake, but this time it was a small rattlesnake. Again, my extremely brave husband tried to kill the snake with a hammer, but it struck at him and bit him on the finger.

His scream woke me up. I was frantic, I had to take care of my husband, but then our baby started wailing. It was so stressful getting descent clothes on, throwing the things I needed for the baby in the car, and then trying to pull myself together as my sweet husband lay in pain in the seat next to me.

Normally I would have called an ambulance, but the hospital is just three blocks down the street. I thought I could drive my husband to the ER faster than calling an ambulance. I was so afraid that I would lose him. Luckily, the doctors were able to get my husband right in and gave him anti-venom treatments.

After half the night and most of the next day at the hospital we were exhausted, but afraid to return to our home. We just don't know how many more rattlesnakes there are in there! I certainly didn't want our baby to be bit, but I wasn't sure what to do.

We finally decided to call a friend and see if we could stay at their place for just a little while. They were more than happy to oblige. As we settled ourselves into our friend's home for the next few days, my husband had me searching the internet to see if there was a local professional that could help us with snake removal.

I found a local professional snake removal technician named Maria who said she had been doing this for years and would be happy to help us with our snake problem.

She said that a rattlesnake on average lays anywhere from 4 to 25 eggs, with 9 to 10 eggs developing into baby snakes. He advised us to not return to the home until he made sure all of the snakes were removed and the holes blocked off.

Maria came out to our property and went through the basement. Over the next two days, she worked diligently to remove the snakes off our property. She said she found a small crack in the fruit-room to the foundation and said that was where the rattlers were getting in. She sealed it off and also checked the outside of the house for any cracks or openings.

Next she installed a special kind of netting a few inches high under the ground around the foundation outside. She said this would keep the snakes from getting into the home in the future. Overall, she found 3 more rattlesnakes on our property.
